Frequently asked questions

The questions coaches ask before they start, and the ones they ask in week three. If yours is not here, send an e-mail.

Getting started

Do I need to know hockey?

No. Hockey Chef is built for the parent who said yes when nobody else did. Drills come with a set-up, a diagram and coaching points, so you know what to say from the side of the pitch.

How much work is it to start?

You set your team up once: names, shirt numbers and the positions they play. For sixteen players that is about fifteen minutes, and after that it is topping up when someone joins.

Can I run more than one team?

Yes. You switch team at the top and everything — sessions, matches, players, stats — belongs to that one team. One subscription covers all of them.

Does it work on an iPad or on Android?

The app is for iPhone. Android is not planned for this version. This website is where you handle your subscription; the coaching itself happens on your phone.

On the pitch

Does it work with no signal?

The match clock, the substitutions and logging goals keep working when the network drops — exactly the things you need during a match. Everything lands once you are back online. Generating a new session does need a connection.

Does it really split playing time fairly?

As fairly as one match allows. Nobody plays exactly the same minutes across four quarters; the plan splits them as evenly as it can and takes account of who got less last time. Over a season it comes out right, and the stats screen is where you check that.

What if someone does not turn up?

You take that player out of the match and the substitution plan rebuilds itself. The absence applies to that one match and says nothing else about the player.

Can I change the plan myself?

Yes. Everything the app suggests can be overridden — the line-up, the plan, the session. If you hand-edit something that contradicts the generated plan, the app drops the plan rather than quietly undoing your change.

Can I just run a generated session as it comes?

Read it through first. A generated plan is a good first draft from someone who has seen a lot of sessions — but it does not know your group, and it does not know three of them are off sick on Tuesday or that one drill fell flat last week. It is a starting point you adjust, not a prescription.

Why are some numbers zero or missing?

Because nobody entered them. A match only counts towards attendance once it has a line-up or a marked absence, and playing time only counts a match with both a substitution plan and a saved result. Goals logged without a scorer are reported as exactly that rather than attributed to someone. The app never guesses a number you did not enter.

The children in your team

What happens to the players' data?

Player names stay inside your team and on the coaches' phones. They do not go to analytics, they do not go to advertising and they do not go to an AI model. There is no analytics SDK, no telemetry and no crash reporter in the app or on this website.

Do names go to the AI that writes the sessions?

No. The session generator is told what you want to work on, how long you have and how many players there are — never who. Exactly what is sent per feature is documented in the repository.

And the video in a skill check?

The clip goes to the model exactly once and is deleted afterwards, whether the analysis worked or not. No name travels with it. The feedback you get back holds no name and no score of a child. If you create a share link for the parents, that one video is kept until the link expires or you revoke it — and then it is genuinely gone.

Can I delete a player completely?

Yes, and it is really gone — deleted, not archived. The same goes for your own account.

Subscription

What does it cost?

$36 a year or $3 a month, for you as a coach. One subscription covers every team you run and every assistant coach you invite. There is no price per player, a second team costs nothing extra, and the coaches you bring along never pay.

Can I try it first?

You start on a trial. When it runs out your team and your data stay exactly where they are; you can take out a subscription on this website afterwards.

Why is this on the website and not in the app?

That is Apple's rule: purchases outside their system may not be offered inside the app. So the app's account screen says the subscription is managed on the website, and paying, changing and cancelling all happen here.

How do I cancel?

On this website, with the same button you started with. The subscription runs to the end of the paid period and is not renewed after that. There is no refund for the remaining time.

What if someone else manages the team next year?

You invite the new coach as a co-manager and then remove yourself. The team, the players and the season stay put.

Not the question you had?

Send an e-mail — there is a person on the other end, and you will usually hear back the same day.
